It’s more important than ever to get your flu shot now.

Getting an annual flu shot is one of the easiest ways to protect your health. Flu vaccination is safe, effective, and widely available. Doctors and public health experts encourage everyone to get a flu shot every year. So why are the experts pushing flu shots even harder this year?

Two reasons:

  1. Many doctors and public health experts expect the COVID pandemic to get worse as the weather cools, the air gets drier, and we all head back inside. Flu season happens every winter, and in recent years we’ve nearly filled hospitals and ICUs, even without COVID in the picture. To make sure that hospitals have enough beds and ventilators to care for people who get sick with flu plus those who get sick with COVID, we need to do everything we can to protect against both illnesses. So get your flu shot.
  2. We don’t know what happens if you get the flu and COVID at the same time because we’ve never before seen COVID during a flu season. Rather than take a chance, it’s important to protect yourself as best you can from dual infections. A flu shot—along with physical distancing, mask wearing, and hand washing—is the best way to do that.

We aim to provide almost 200 million flu shots this year, and that process will take time. So it’s crucial that no one delays their own vaccine. You can help keep everyone safe—including yourself!—by getting your flu shot as soon as you can.
