Flatten the Curve!

What does that mean?

Flattening the curve refers to the idea that we need to slow down the pace of infection. If we do this, we can prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, which allows everyone the best chance at a healthy recovery from both COVID-19 and any other regular reason people end up in the hospital (e.g. “I’m having a baby!” or “I cut my hand opening a can of tuna!”).

How can I help?

You should immediately start practice "social distancing":

  • People should work from home if possible, absolutely stay home if feeling sick, and wash hands often.

  • Conventions, parades, sporting events, and other public events should be postponed.

  • Cities and governments must support efforts to keep people at home and out of public spaces.

  • Special efforts should be made to reduce exposure for elderly and vulnerable people.

These are all voluntary actions, and this is in contrast with mandatory requirements to stay home, close businesses, etc., as has happened recently in Italy.

As noted by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) we want to "strike a fine balance between protecting health, minimizing economic and social disruption, and respecting human rights” when making decisions during a public health emergency.
